Uncinia unciniata
New Zealand Hook Sedge Grass-like perennial
An understated but gently attractive sedge which forms slow-growing, tightly packed clumps of rhizomes from which narrow, leathery, rust-coloured leaves and stems grow. These hold their colour all year and in late summer are joined by dark brown flower spikes. Protect from extremes of frost.
Soil preference: Moist but free-draining
Aspect: Sun or part shade
Season of interest: Year round
Height and spread: 25cm × 30cm (10in × 1ft)
Companion plants: A fine plant to blend with contrasting, silvery foliage, as supplied by Salix lanata or S. helvetica. Also pretty with spring perennials such as Omphalodes verna or with such blue spring bulbs as Muscari armeniacum or Scilla sibirica.
